Horary Astrology, known in Vedic tradition as Prashna Jyotish, is the art of answering specific questions by erecting a chart for the exact moment the question is asked.

Instead of relying on the native’s birth chart, the astrologer uses the “birth” of the question itself.

How Prashna Works

1. The querent (person asking) poses a clear, specific question.
2. The astrologer notes the precise time and place the question is received or understood.
3. A chart is cast for that moment using the sidereal zodiac.
4. The astrologer analyzes the chart according to classical Prashna rules to determine the answer.

The logic is simple yet profound: the moment a sincere question is born carries the astrological signature of its answer.

When to Use Prashna

Prashna is especially useful in these situations:

• Birth time or place is unknown or unreliable.
• The question is very specific and time-bound.
• The person wants a quick, direct answer without a full chart reading.
• There are multiple possible outcomes and the querent needs clarity on one matter.

Common Prashna questions include:

• Will I get this job / promotion / contract?
• Is my lost item recoverable, and where?
• Should I buy / sell this property or vehicle?
• Will my marriage happen soon, and with whom?
• Is this the right time for a particular action?

Key Rules in Vedic Prashna

Classical texts (especially Prasna Marga and other works) emphasize several important principles:

• The question must be sincere and asked only once.
• The first impression or thought that arises in the astrologer’s mind upon receiving the question is often significant.
• The rising sign (Lagna) and its lord represent the querent.
• The house related to the matter (e.g., 7th for marriage, 10th for career) and its lord represent the outcome.
• Planetary aspects, conjunctions, and strengths are analyzed with special attention to the sub-lord or star-lord in some systems.
• Certain yogas and combinations have specific meanings in Prashna that may differ slightly from natal interpretation.

Many practitioners also use the ruling planets at the time of judgment (the moment the astrologer begins analyzing) as additional confirmation.

Strengths of Prashna

• Does not require accurate birth data.
• Can give very direct yes/no or timing answers.
• Often feels more immediate and practical than natal chart analysis.
• Excellent for verifying or clarifying specific doubts even when a birth chart is available.

Limitations

• The question must be clear and specific. Vague or “should I do A or B or C?” questions are harder.
• The astrologer’s state of mind and sincerity matter.
• Some classical rules can seem contradictory across texts, requiring experience to apply correctly.
• Over-reliance on Prashna without understanding the natal chart can miss the bigger picture.

Prashna and Modern Practice

Many Vedic astrologers today combine Prashna with natal chart analysis. They may first look at the birth chart for overall life patterns and then cast a Prashna chart for a specific current question. Some also use KP-style sub-lord techniques in Prashna for even finer timing.
