Mantras and Jap: Planetary Remedies Guide

Mantras are sound formulas that Jyotish uses as one of its most accessible remedial tools. The right mantra, chanted regularly and with sincere intent, is said to create a resonance with a planet's energy — helping to balance a weak or afflicted graha in your birth chart without elaborate ritual.

Types of planetary mantras

Beeja mantras (seed syllables)

Beeja ("seed") mantras are short sound formulas — often a single syllable or a brief string of syllables — considered the concentrated essence of a planet's vibration. They are considered the most energetically specific mantra form and are most effective when selected according to chart needs.

Planet Beeja Mantra
Sun (Surya) Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah
Moon (Chandra) Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraaya Namah
Mars (Mangal) Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaaya Namah
Mercury (Budh) Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaaya Namah
Jupiter (Guru) Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah
Venus (Shukra) Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraaya Namah
Saturn (Shani) Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaischaraaya Namah
Rahu Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Raahave Namah
Ketu Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah

Vedic mantras

These are hymns drawn from the Rigveda and other Vedic texts, traditionally recited in planetary worship (graha shanti pujas). The Aditya Hridayam for the Sun and the Navagraha Stotra are well-known examples. Vedic mantras tend to be longer, more devotional in character, and broadly considered safe for all to use.

Stotras and stutis

Longer devotional hymns praising a specific planet — the Shani Stotra, Mangala Stotra, or Guru Stotram — are widely recited at temples and at home. These are considered gentle and accessible remedies, suitable for regular practice without specialist guidance.

How to practise jap

Choose your mantra

Match the mantra to the planet you wish to balance. A useful first step is to understand which planets are currently active: check the live planetary calculator to see which grahas are transiting sensitive points, and combine that with your birth chart knowledge about which planet rules your current dasha period.

The mala (rosary)

A mala has 108 beads plus one guru bead. One complete pass = 108 repetitions. Malas are made from different materials traditionally linked to specific planets:

Mala Material Associated Planet(s)
Rudraksha Saturn, general spiritual use
Crystal (sphatik) Moon, Venus
Red coral or red sandalwood Mars
Tulsi (holy basil) Sun, Jupiter
Gold-washed or copper Sun

Do not cross the guru bead during jap — when you reach it, reverse direction and continue.

Formal counts (anushthana)

For a full planetary remedy course (anushthana), typically done over 40 days, classical texts prescribe the following total repetition counts:

Planet Traditional Jap Count
Sun 7,000
Moon 11,000
Mars 10,000
Mercury 9,000
Jupiter 19,000
Venus 16,000
Saturn 23,000
Rahu 18,000
Ketu 17,000

For a sustainable daily practice rather than a formal anushthana, 108 repetitions each morning is a practical and widely respected standard.

Day and time

Each planet rules a day of the week and a planetary hora (hour) within that day. Beginning on the planet's ruling day and chanting at or near sunrise on that day is considered most auspicious:

  • Sun — Sunday, sunrise
  • Moon — Monday
  • Mars — Tuesday
  • Mercury — Wednesday
  • Jupiter — Thursday
  • Venus — Friday
  • Saturn — Saturday

If you can only chant once a week on the planet's day, that is better than daily chanting at an arbitrary time — though daily practice is ideal when possible.

Posture, direction, and setting

Face east at sunrise for most planetary mantras. Sit on a clean cotton or woollen mat (asana). Bathe before sitting if possible. Light a ghee lamp or incense at the place where you sit. The physical cleanliness and clarity of space are part of the practice — they signal to the mind that something intentional is beginning.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra (Om Tryambakam Yajamahe…) is technically a Shiva mantra but is widely prescribed in Jyotish for health, longevity, and general protection — especially when the 8th house or its lord is afflicted in the natal chart or under difficult transit. It is considered safe and beneficial for anyone to chant regardless of chart specifics.

Jap and bhav: sincerity over mechanics

Jyotish texts emphasise that mechanical repetition carries less power than sincere, focused chanting. The Sanskrit word bhav refers to the inner disposition you bring — approaching jap with humility, gratitude, and genuine intent is considered more important than counting perfectly or achieving a prescribed total. A shorter daily practice done with real attention outweighs a longer routine done distractedly.

Combining mantras with other remedies

Jap integrates naturally with other upay. Saturn remedies, for example, often combine the Saturn beeja mantra on Saturdays with acts of seva (selfless service), wearing dark blue or black, and — when chart-indicated — a gemstone. For the gemstone side of planetary remedies, see gemstones (ratna) in Vedic astrology. For the full range of simpler, daily upays, see Vedic remedies and daily practices.

Frequently asked questions

What is jap in Vedic astrology?

Jap (also spelled japa) is the repetitive chanting or mental recitation of a mantra a fixed number of times. In Jyotish, jap is prescribed for specific planets as a remedy to balance their energy in the birth chart.

How many times should I chant a planetary mantra?

Classical texts prescribe specific counts per graha — typically in the thousands for a formal course. For a regular daily practice, 108 repetitions (one mala) each morning is a widely used standard.

Can I chant any planetary mantra without checking my chart?

Simple devotional stotras and Vedic hymns are generally considered safe for anyone. Beeja mantras are more concentrated; traditional Jyotish advice is to select them based on your chart's needs, and when in doubt to consult a Jyotishi.
