The 12 Rashis (Zodiac Signs) in Vedic Astrology

Published January 11, 2026

rashizodiac signsbasics

The rashi (राशि) — the Vedic zodiac sign — divides the 360° ecliptic into twelve equal segments of 30° each. Every planet in your birth chart, and every planet in today's sky, occupies one of these twelve rashis. That placement shapes how the planet expresses its significations.

Understanding the rashis is the second key to reading a Jyotish chart, after the planets themselves. If the Navagraha (planets) are the actors, the rashi is the costume and personality each actor wears — the mode of expression. The bhava (house) then determines the stage on which that performance takes place.

Elements — the four tattvas

Each rashi belongs to one of four classical elements (tattvas), which describe its fundamental energetic quality:

  • Fire (Agni) — Mesha, Simha, Dhanus: Active, outward-directed, motivated by will and purpose. Fire rashis are traditionally associated with initiative, leadership, and directness.
  • Earth (Prithvi) — Vrishabha, Kanya, Makara: Practical, grounded, oriented toward the material and tangible. Earth rashis are linked to stability, craft, and methodical persistence.
  • Air (Vayu) — Mithuna, Tula, Kumbha: Communicative, relational, idea-oriented. Air rashis are associated with intellectual agility, social intelligence, and the exchange of information.
  • Water (Jala) — Karka, Vrishchika, Meena: Sensitive, intuitive, emotionally deep. Water rashis are associated with memory, feeling, and the subtle or psychic dimensions of experience.

Qualities — Chara, Sthira, and Dwiswabhava

Beyond elements, each rashi has a modal quality that describes how it initiates, sustains, or bridges:

Quality Signs Character
Movable (Chara) Mesha, Karka, Tula, Makara Initiates action; comfortable with change and new beginnings
Fixed (Sthira) Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika, Kumbha Sustains and consolidates; persistent, sometimes resistant to change
Dual (Dwiswabhava) Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanus, Meena Bridges or transitions; holds two natures simultaneously

These qualities become practically important when reading aspects and yogas. A planet in a Kendra (angular house) occupying a movable sign, for example, is considered especially active and capable of producing results.

Ruling planets and sign lordship

Each rashi has a ruling planet (rashi swami or lord). This lordship creates a direct link between the planet and any house whose cusp falls in that sign:

  • Mars rules Mesha and Vrishchika
  • Venus rules Vrishabha and Tula
  • Mercury rules Mithuna and Kanya
  • The Moon rules Karka (alone)
  • The Sun rules Simha (alone)
  • Jupiter rules Dhanus and Meena
  • Saturn rules Makara and Kumbha

Note that Rahu and Ketu (the lunar nodes) are not primary sign lords in the classical Parashara system, though some traditions assign them co-lordship of Kumbha and Vrishchika respectively.

When a planet occupies the rashi it rules, it is in its own sign (swakshetra) — a position of dignity and comfort. The planet can express its full range of significations. When a planet occupies the rashi of an enemy, it is under strain, and its significations may be distorted.

Exaltation and debilitation

Beyond sign lordship, each planet has one rashi where it is exalted (uchcha) — at peak strength — and one where it is debilitated (neecha):

Planet Exaltation (uchcha) Debilitation (neecha)
Sun Mesha (Aries) Tula (Libra)
Moon Vrishabha (Taurus) Vrishchika (Scorpio)
Mars Makara (Capricorn) Karka (Cancer)
Mercury Kanya (Virgo) Meena (Pisces)
Jupiter Karka (Cancer) Makara (Capricorn)
Venus Meena (Pisces) Kanya (Virgo)
Saturn Tula (Libra) Mesha (Aries)

A planet near its exact exaltation degree operates at its most refined expression. A debilitated planet does not simply "fail" — its energy may be redirected, suppressed, or expressed in an inverted or unconventional way. Debilitation can also be cancelled (neecha bhanga) by specific planetary configurations that restore strength.

Your Janma Rashi — the Moon sign in Jyotish

While Western astrology centers on the Sun sign, Vedic astrology gives primary importance to the Janma Rashi — the rashi the Moon occupied at your birth. The Moon sign is used for:

  • Transit (gochar) readings — transiting planets are assessed primarily in relation to the Janma Rashi, not the Sun sign
  • Dasha start point — the Vimshottari Dasha calculation begins from the nakshatra of the natal Moon
  • Emotional and mental temperament — the Moon sign describes habitual emotional responses and the quality of the mind

How rashis, planets, and houses work together

A rashi's meaning is always contextual. Three questions guide interpretation:

  1. Which planet is in this rashi? The planet colors the rashi's expression with its own significations.
  2. Which house does this rashi fall in? The bhava brings the life-area focus.
  3. What is the rashi lord doing? The condition of the sign's ruling planet matters as much as — sometimes more than — any planet actually placed in the rashi.

For understanding how transiting planets move through these rashis right now, see what is a planetary transit. For the planets occupying each rashi, the Navagraha guide covers each graha's domain and dignity in detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rashi in Vedic astrology?

A rashi is a zodiac sign — one of 12 equal 30-degree segments of the ecliptic. Every planet in your birth chart occupies a rashi, which shapes how that planet expresses itself. The rashi the Moon occupies at birth is called the Janma Rashi (Moon sign) and is the primary reference point for transit readings.

How do I find my Vedic rashi?

Your Janma Rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth, calculated using the sidereal zodiac. Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, your Moon sign is often different from what a Western horoscope would show. Enter your birth date, time, and place in the GoChar Live chart calculator to find it precisely.

Are the 12 rashis the same as Western zodiac signs?

They share the same 12 archetypes and names, but Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (aligned to actual star positions) while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (aligned to seasons). A gap of roughly 23–24 degrees exists today, so the same planet can fall in different rashis under each system.
