9 Navagraha (Planets) in Jyotish

The Navagraha (नवग्रह) — literally the "nine seizers" — are the heart of Vedic astrology. Every chart reading and every transit analysis begins with these nine celestial influences: the Sun, the Moon, five visible planets, and the two lunar nodes.

In Jyotish the word graha does not mean "planet" in the modern astronomical sense alone. It carries the idea of something that grasps or influences human experience. The Navagraha describe different qualities of consciousness, karma, and timing that play out in a person's life.

The Nine Planets

Jyotish works with exactly nine grahas. Here they are with their Sanskrit names and primary roles:

Graha Sanskrit Nature Key Significations
Sun Surya Natural malefic Soul (atma), father, authority, vitality, self
Moon Chandra Natural benefic Mind (manas), mother, emotions, nourishment
Mars Mangal Natural malefic Energy, courage, siblings, property, competition
Mercury Budha Neutral Intellect, speech, commerce, skill, learning
Jupiter Guru Natural benefic Wisdom, children, wealth, dharma, growth
Venus Shukra Natural benefic Love, marriage, arts, luxury, relationships
Saturn Shani Natural malefic Karma, discipline, time, longevity, service
Rahu Rahu Malefic Desire, foreign matters, illusion, ambition
Ketu Ketu Malefic Detachment, spirituality, past karma, moksha

These nine are placed in the twelve signs and houses of every birth chart. Their condition, dignity, aspects, and current movement determine much of what a reading reveals.

The Two Luminaries

Surya and Chandra are treated separately because they are the sources of light.

Surya (Sun) represents the soul, the sense of individual identity, and the father. A well-placed Sun gives leadership, clarity, and strong vitality. An afflicted Sun can show struggles with authority or self-confidence.

Chandra (Moon) governs the mind, feelings, and the mother. Because the Moon changes sign every two to three days, it is the fastest-moving graha and the one most people feel on a daily basis.

The Five Tara Grahas

The planets from Mars through Saturn are called the tara grahas (star planets). Each carries a distinct energy that modifies the houses and signs it occupies:

  • Mangal (Mars) brings initiative, courage, and drive. It can also indicate conflict or accidents when poorly placed.
  • Budha (Mercury) rules thinking, communication, and commerce. Its condition shows how clearly and effectively a person expresses ideas.
  • Guru (Jupiter) is the great expander and teacher. It governs wisdom, morality, children, and prosperity.
  • Shukra (Venus) signifies love, beauty, marriage, and comforts. It is especially important for relationship matters.
  • Shani (Saturn) delivers the results of past actions. It teaches through time, responsibility, and sometimes delay.

The Shadow Planets: Rahu and Ketu

Rahu and Ketu do not have physical bodies. They are the mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. Vedic tradition nevertheless gives them full planetary status.

Rahu represents intense worldly desire, foreign influences, obsession, and unconventional paths. It amplifies whatever it touches.

Ketu represents detachment, spiritual insight, and the completion of karmic patterns. It can bring both losses and profound inner understanding.

Together they form the karmic axis of the chart.

How the Navagraha Function in a Chart

The nine planets operate on several levels at once:

  • As sign lords they rule specific areas of life according to the houses they own.
  • As karakas (significators) they have natural portfolios — for example Guru for children and wisdom, Shukra for spouse.
  • In the dasha system one graha after another becomes the primary time lord for periods lasting years.
  • Through gochar (transits) they move across the fixed birth chart and activate different houses and planets at different times.

A single planet can therefore influence you in multiple ways depending on whether you are looking at its natal position, its current transit, or its dasha period.

Seeing the Navagraha in Practice

The most direct way to work with the nine planets is to look at their actual positions. In the live transit calculator, you can view:

  • The exact sign, degree, and nakshatra of each of the nine grahas
  • Whether any planet is retrograde
  • Current transits relative to any birth chart

This lets you connect the classical meanings of the Navagraha with what is actually happening in the sky right now.

The Navagraha and Remedies

Each of the nine planets has traditional remedies when it is weak or afflicted in a chart. These include specific mantras, acts of charity, gemstones (when appropriate), and lifestyle adjustments. Remedies are always chosen according to the full chart rather than generic rules.

Common Questions

Are the outer planets used in traditional Vedic astrology?

Classical Jyotish works exclusively with the Navagraha. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are not part of the original system.

Is the Sun always considered difficult?

The Sun is a natural malefic because of its intense, burning quality, yet a strong and well-placed Sun is one of the most auspicious factors for leadership and self-expression.

How do transits of the Navagraha differ from the birth chart?

Your birth chart is fixed. The Navagraha in transit show which of those fixed placements are being activated at the present time.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Navagraha in Vedic astrology?

The Navagraha are the nine planets used in Jyotish: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu and Ketu.

Why are Rahu and Ketu included even though they are not physical planets?

Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes. Classical texts treat them as full planets because of their strong influence on eclipses, desire, and the karmic axis in every chart.

How do the nine planets influence daily life?

Each graha has natural significations. Their natal placements describe lifelong tendencies, while their current transits (gochar) show what themes are active right now.
