Exaltation, Debilitation and Moolatrikona of Planets in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), every planet performs differently depending on which sign it occupies. The system of planetary dignity — uccha (exaltation), neecha (debilitation) and moolatrikona — gives you a quick read on how comfortably or awkwardly a planet can express its natural qualities.
What Is Planetary Dignity?
Think of a planet as an ambassador with a specific portfolio. When posted in a supportive environment, the ambassador thrives and gets results. In a hostile or unfamiliar setting, the same work becomes harder. Planetary dignity describes this fit between a planet and its sign.
Jyotish recognises a hierarchy of sign-based strength:
- Exaltation (Uccha) — the sign and specific degree where a planet performs at its absolute peak
- Moolatrikona — a special zone within the planet's own sign where it functions with particular ease
- Own sign (Swa) — the sign(s) a planet rules; comfortable but not as intense as exaltation
- Friendly sign — a sign ruled by a planetary friend; generally supportive
- Neutral sign — neither especially helpful nor harmful
- Inimical sign — a sign ruled by an enemy planet; the planet struggles
- Debilitation (Neecha) — the sign and degree opposite to exaltation; the planet is least comfortable here
Exaltation (Uccha): A Planet at Its Peak
An exalted planet expresses all of its significations with full force and confidence. Classical Jyotish texts describe an exalted planet as being like a king in his own palace — authority is natural, resources are available, and purpose is clear. The peak of exaltation is a specific degree, but the exaltation influence spans the whole sign.
If Jupiter is transiting through Cancer (its sign of exaltation), its qualities of wisdom, generosity and dharmic guidance flow easily into whatever house Cancer represents in your birth chart.
Debilitation (Neecha): A Planet Under Strain
A planet in its sign of debilitation must work harder to express itself. This does not mean the planet becomes permanently harmful — but it faces internal friction. A debilitated Mars may show up as difficulty asserting oneself, or as energy that needs careful channelling rather than direct application.
Neecha Bhanga: Cancellation of Debilitation
Classical texts describe conditions under which debilitation is cancelled (neecha bhanga), creating a kind of strength born of overcoming difficulty. Common cancellation conditions include:
- The lord of the debilitation sign is exalted in the chart
- The planet that would be exalted in that sign is angular (kendra) from the Lagna or Moon
- The debilitated planet is aspected by its own sign lord
When neecha bhanga operates strongly, the individual often works through the planet's challenges and eventually achieves notable outcomes in that area of life.
Moolatrikona: The Planet's Home Ground
Moolatrikona is a special zone within a planet's own sign — distinct from ordinary sign ownership. Here the planet behaves like a skilled professional in their most familiar setting: not as spectacular as exaltation, but highly effective and consistent. It ranks above plain own-sign placement but below uccha.
The Dignity Table
| Planet | Exaltation (Sign & Degree) | Debilitation (Sign & Degree) | Moolatrikona Zone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (Surya) | Aries, 10° | Libra, 10° | Leo 0°–20° |
| Moon (Chandra) | Taurus, 3° | Scorpio, 3° | Taurus 4°–20° |
| Mars (Mangal) | Capricorn, 28° | Cancer, 28° | Aries 0°–12° |
| Mercury (Budh) | Virgo, 15° | Pisces, 15° | Virgo 16°–20° |
| Jupiter (Guru) | Cancer, 5° | Capricorn, 5° | Sagittarius 0°–10° |
| Venus (Shukra) | Pisces, 27° | Virgo, 27° | Libra 0°–15° |
| Saturn (Shani) | Libra, 20° | Aries, 20° | Aquarius 0°–20° |
Rahu and Ketu: their exaltation and debilitation signs are debated across classical texts. The most commonly cited positions are Rahu exalted in Taurus or Gemini and Ketu exalted in Scorpio or Sagittarius, with the opposite signs as debilitation.
How Dignity Shapes Transit Readings
When you check the live planetary positions, notice the sign each planet occupies. A planet transiting through its exaltation sign will tend to amplify the promise of the house it activates in your birth chart. A planet in debilitation during transit may bring delays, introspection or the need for extra effort in that house's themes.
For the slow-moving outer planets, this becomes especially significant. Jupiter transiting Cancer (its exaltation) for roughly a year is a markedly different experience from Jupiter moving through Capricorn (its debilitation). Understanding dignity tells you not just where a planet is, but how well it can act from there.

Combining Dignity With House Position
Dignity tells you how strong a planet is. House position tells you which area of life that strength or struggle applies to. An exalted planet in an inauspicious house still operates in a challenging life area. A debilitated planet in a powerful house may produce volatility in an otherwise prominent domain. Always read these two layers together.
A Practical Starting Point
When studying any chart — natal or transit — run this quick check:
- List where each planet sits by sign
- Note whether it is in exaltation, moolatrikona, own sign, friendly, neutral, inimical or debilitation
- Flag any debilitated planets and look for neecha bhanga conditions
- Compare each planet's natal dignity to where it is in the current transit sky
This checklist reveals which planetary themes in your life are running with the current and which ones are working against it. For a closer look at how dignity interacts with transit timing, see transit effects in Jyotish.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between exaltation and moolatrikona?
Exaltation (uccha) is the single sign and degree where a planet performs at its absolute best. Moolatrikona is a zone within the planet's own sign where it operates with great ease and consistency, ranked slightly below exaltation but above ordinary sign ownership.
Does a debilitated planet always give bad results?
Not always. A debilitated planet can be strengthened through neecha bhanga — cancellation of debilitation — when certain other chart conditions are present. In such cases the individual often overcomes the planet's challenges and achieves notable results in that area.
How does planetary dignity affect transits?
When a transiting planet passes through its sign of exaltation it can amplify the themes of that house in your chart. When it transits its debilitation sign those same themes may feel restricted or require extra effort until the planet moves on.
